21 June 2004
education.au limited, the registrar for the .edu.au domain, will be issuing a notice to registrants of the 6000 plus existing domain names licences informing them of the introduction of the user pays system for existing domain name holders.
The company will also be launching a new interface (www.domainname.edu.au) which will improve useability and incorporate a payment gateway system to automate the application and payment process.
Registrants will be required to pay the registrar $AUD110.00 for a two year licence, a fee which was recommended by the edu.au Domain Administration Committee [eDAC]. Policy decisions relating to the edu.au domain space are managed by eDAC.
eDAC is a subcommittee of the Australian Information and Communications Technology in Education Committee [AICTEC] which was established by the Ministerial Council for Education, Employment, Training and Youth Affairs [MCEETYA] in 2001.
education.au limited was contracted by the Australian Government Department of Education, Science and Training [DEST] to act as registrar for the edu.au domain. education.au limited is a national ICT agency owned by all ministers of education and training.
education.au limited processes applications for new .edu domain names. It also will collect renewal fees and issue an official domain name licence to domain name holders. education.au limited is the only endorsed registrar for the .edu.au domain.
From 22 June 2004 holders of edu.au domain names, or their agents, will be required to update details relating to their domain name on the domain name website at www.domainname.edu.au.
An agent is an organisation that a registrant has authorised to act on its behalf. The agent will be authorised to confirm registrant details are accurate and be responsible for payment on behalf of the registrant.
From July 1, 2004 , a staged implementation of the user pays for existing domain name holders will be implemented. A letter to registrants will explain the process in more detail.
Some jurisdictions in the school sector will pay for domain names licences on behalf of individual registrants, but this will vary from state to state. Further advice in regards to this will be provided by these respective organisations.
